About this Service
GP Referral for ADHD Assessment and Ongoing Medication Management
At Brunswick Doctors, our GPs can help facilitate ADHD assessments and manage ADHD medications, including applying for the necessary Schedule 8 Medication permits if medication is required. We work alongside psychiatrists to ensure patients receive appropriate treatment and ongoing care.
To get started, please book a long consultation with our doctor and state 'ADHD Referral' as your reason for the visit, or contact our team in advance so we can prepare everything for you.
Below is a step-by-step guide to our ADHD referral and management process.
Step 1: Initial ADHD Consultation
What to expect:
ADHD Questionnaire: You will be required to complete an ADHD questionnaire before your appointment. If you would like to fill it out before your appointment, contact our team and we can forward the questionnaire to you. Otherwise, you can complete it at the clinic.
Medical & Mental Health History: Our doctor will conduct a thorough review of your medical history, mental health background, lifestyle factors and current medications.
Pathology Request: If needed, our doctors may request additional testing to assist with the assessment.
ADHD Referral: Our doctors will write a referral to Fluence Clinic or your preferred provider for ADHD assessment under Medicare item 291.
Cost: There will be a $100 out of pocket fee for the initial consultation. Please note that your chosen provider will have another fee for ADHD assessment.
Step 2: ADHD Follow-Up Appointment
After receiving your ADHD assessment report, our doctor will help apply for an S8 permit, if medication is required. Once the permit is approved, our team member will contact you to book a follow-up appointment with our doctors.
What to expect:
Review of Assessment
Discussion of medication and dosing
Our team will help you schedule 3 follow-up appointments every two months to check in with the doctor. These regular check-ins are essential for monitoring your progress and ensuring your medication dosage is appropriate.
Please note that each follow up appointment will incur a $35 out of pocket fee
Step 3: Ongoing 6-Monthly Reviews
Every six months, patients will need a review for continued prescription management.
What to Expect:
If the patient remains stable and no dosage changes are required, the doctor can issue scripts every six months for up to two years without an in-person consultation. A $35 administration fee applies for script issuance.
If a medication change is required between reviews, a standard consultation fee applies.
Step 4: Two-Year Psychiatry Review & S8 Permit Renewal
At the two-year mark, the S8 permit will expire, and patients must see a psychiatrist again for reassessment.
Our GP will prepare the referral in advance before the last 6-monthly review to ensure continuity of care.
